Whistling Woman
03:18
|
|||
You kept the gun behind the door wrapped in your mother's apron
A preacher man with the southern law, you thought that you had made it
Well she left her home, she walked alone, to be with you
And you made her your wife, she gave you her life, and now she stands behind you, oh
A whistling woman and a crowing hen
Is neither good for God nor men
You left no marks, there were no blows, just the ugly words God gave you
And you pushed her down beneath the waves and still she tried to save you
Well you took her mind and left it there, you say you didn't mean to lose it
Well now she's holding the gun and you're sleeping there, she'll say she didn't mean to use it, oh
A whistling woman and a crowing hen
Is neither good for God nor men

Prayer
04:16
|
|||
I saw you you walking you were holding the bird that we found on the beach
Its wing it was broken its last call spoken its heartbeat out of reach
Then I saw you running you were holding a gone-baby in your arms
You said that you'd take it to a lady who'd cried for a child of her own
What did you bring me? A bird that can't fly? a child that can't cry?
Leaves nothing besides us, nothing behind us, nothing inside the loss
I won't lay a claim on you if you will set me free
I will call your name to God, she will let me be
I saw you sleeping you were dreaming of somebody else with my name
And I saw you waking, your heart mistaken my darling, there's no one to blame
What did you leave me? A bed full of lies? A race to goodbye?
Leaves nothing besides us, nothing behind us, nothing inside the loss
I can't write a song for you sad enough to sing
I will say a prayer for you, you will feel its wings
Walk on, baby walk on, don't turn around coz I will be gone
Lay down the sword, pick up your gun, kill off the love you thought you had won

Oh Daddy
04:42
|
|||
Oh, oh Daddy go down to the river, take off your clothes, wade in the water
No undertow, stand til you shiver, wait til you know the fate of your daughter
Oh, oh Daddy go down to the garden, dig up the roses where they've been dying
Call to the wind when no one is listening, tell them your sins, tell them you're lying
She never took a lesson from you, no no she
Heard all the stories and knew they weren't true, so take you
All of your poetry into the fire, line by line
Give all your stolen words back to their writers
Oh, oh Daddy no, you broke all the china, looking for love, you never did find it
Alone in your room, you sing to the flowers, darkness comes quickly, you find you don't mind it
Pin all your crimes on the sins of the mother, God knows you
Give all your smiles to the children of others, what say you?
Drink of her cup, then fill it with brine, time and time
Buy her the boat, then watch it go by her
Oh, oh Daddy go down to the river

Lighthouse
02:57
|
|||
I know you miss her and I know you're there
In a boat off the shore, alone in your head
And the ocean's so big and you are so small
Alone on the wave of the sorrow that binds us all
There's a light on the land, come home to the fire
The arms are all open, there's laughter and wine
Let me give you a heart to carry you home
Let me find me a smile on your face, my sad, sad one
Well the road it was long and the evening was cold
You walked til your feet were scraping your soul
I followed you down to the shore in the dark
And I heard your lament and I saw your weeping heart
But you came at me then, teeth bared, eyes wild
But the mark of a dog hides an orphaned child
Come take my hand, come to the hearth
Lay your head, lay your head, on my heart
I'll stay with you, I'll pray with you
You'll hear her call, you'll sleep once more

Run on Water
04:14
|
|||
You say that you're leaving
And I'm watching you gathering your things
And you know that I won't ask you to stay
But I'll think of you every hour
And I'll see your face
In every stranger, every day
I want to run on water with you
So fast that our feet don't break through
I want to reach the other side of this history
And find you again, anew
Perhaps when we're older
Perhaps when we're quieter
We'll find ourselves another place to share
And I'll tell you I'm different
And you'll say we're the same
And you'll laugh at my weakness, but I won't care
Coz nobody knows me the way that you do
How will I recognise the truth without you?
How will I find the brighter side of my mind?
Make my way through the dark to the view?
Most people find they spend most of their lives
Searching for something to make it alright
Only to find the one that they thought they desired
Cuts out the light
I want to run on water with you
So fast that our feet don't break through
I want to reach the other side of this history
And find you again, anew
Perhaps when we're older
Perhaps when we're quieter

She was honey to you, in more ways than one
The voice of an angel and a fearless tongue
You were letters and laughter and words, and the whole wide world to her
And nothing's come close since you broke to the way that you were
So you searched for her, cloud-busting London skies
Looking for the girl with the world and sunflowers in her eyes
And she searched for you, swimming in the Sydney sea
Looking for the man that nobody else could possibly be
Oh, funny how the world throws you back again
You're running from the start when you thought you were close to the end
But maybe this is where you belong
Just coz you were young doesn't mean you were wrong, no...
A bottle of wine, a letter left on the stairs
Your heart in your mouth, waiting to find out if she is still there
Bright in the memory of 23 years gone past
In those days that never ended, those days that were meant to last
And she says, honey how the world's thrown us back again
We're loving from the start when we thought we were close to the end
Honey this is where we belong
Just coz we were young doesn't mean we were wrong, no...

Black Dogs
03:31
|
|||
Oh my darling, I'm not all I'm cracked up to be
When you look at me, please don't tell me what you see
Pass the bottle, let's not talk tonight
Close the door, I don't want to start a fight
Black dogs, sleeping at my feet, don't wake them
Black dogs, howling in my sleep, don't wake them
Oh my darling, you know I won't stand in your way
I can't tell you when the daylight will come again
Would I were blind, so as not to see you cry
Coz I cannot hold you today, they won't let me dry your eyes
Black dogs, sleeping at my feet, don't wake them
Black dogs, howling in my sleep, don't wake them
Here comes the sun again, I'll go and buy some flowers
Could this be love again, curling through my fingers?
Show me your face again, let me kiss your tears
Promise me you won't wake them
Black dogs, sleeping at my feet, don't wake them
Black dogs, howling in my sleep, don't wake them, don't wake them, don't wake them

For My Love
03:57
|
|||
Take the photos off the wall, pack them all away
The laughter lines of all those faces have nothing left to say
They were the comfort of my days my dear, they taught me who to be
But you see me clearer than anyone who ever had a claim on me
For years you waited for the one to call your own
It's taken these many-numbered days my love to find my way home and I'm
Sorry I'm late my dear, the thought of you waiting, my dear
Lay down your head my dear, I'll never leave the warmth of your embrace, have no fear
The slate is clean now my love, the page is blank and free
Lay your words upon me, tell me what you see
I am the one you loved, come from far away
Waiting and wanting for all this time to have the words to say that I'm
Sorry I'm late my dear, the thought of you waiting, my dear
Lay down your weary head, I'll never leave the warmth of your embrace again

Wolf
04:37
|
|||
Don't say you're coming round
Coz I don't want to see you again
Secrecy taking its toll
A line I didn't want to bend
You say you are my friend but you look at me with blood in your eyes
And I know you're a wolf, you're a wolf
And I'm running
You touched my skin when it had turned cold
You'll me things until I unfold
But he whispers my past into layers that hold me, oh
Take me home
He may leave me with years every year, but I never asked you to dry my eyes
He knows you're a wolf, you're a wolf
Let me alone, let me be, you only want what you see
Coz it belongs to someone else, even if it's on the shelf
You're a wolf, you're a wolf
And I'm running
You're a wolf, you're a wolf
And I'm running
Don't say you're coming round
Coz I'm not going to be here

Amsterdam
04:24
|
|||
The streets they took us down
To the red glow in the dark hear of the town
The revellers sighed their collective goodbyes
As we wandered around where a weary man can drown
The ladies they lounged in the doorways
A window or two was lit with a blue and their mouths were full of roses
Are they the sisters of mercy? Or are they the saint of the tawdry?
Whatever the answer, you'd lower your pants for a chance at a moment of heavenly whoring
What does a girl give a man
Nothing else on this God-forsaken Earth can?
How does the touch of a tender hand
Bring a tear to the eye of the hardest man?
We stopped for a moment to watch the display
She lowered her eyes, held onto me tight as we waited out our shame
An old man rounded the corner
"Well how do you do?"
The moon it was new and it kissed him on the shoulder
He shuffled along at the side
In the shadows where not even dogs would hide
He came to her window and smiled
Lowered his hat, a cane at his side
Well the beauty, she reached out her hand
The old one held out his money, trembling by the light of the lamp
"Come inside old friend. I've been missing you since I've been kissing all of those other lonely men"
My little girl, she took my arm
I said "Baby don't fret" she said "Mama, I see beauty in this,
That was the sweetest thing I've ever seen"
She was 14, she was only 14
Oh Amsterdam, oh Amsterdam
